Bratislava City Museum

This is one of the most extensive resources of the museum. The collection comprises artefacts – paper money, coins, vouchers, small moulded tokens, as well as items relating to mintage, mainly from the region of Greater Bratislava. Comparable material originates from other regions in Slovakia or elsewhere in the world.

The most remarkable and most valued is a collection of Bratislava Celtic coins of various nominal values and bearing the names of fifteen potentates which were minted from 70 to 44 B.C. They originate from the great treasures of the city. The Bratislava mintage is also represented by the minting of quarters, denarii, obols, groschen, thalers, ducats in various denominations and proportions dating from 1430 to 1722, of which the 5-ducat piece of Leopold I^st from 1675 is the prime exhibit. The denarii, groschen, and thalers are the result of archaeological research in the city and also mass troves from over the whole of Slovakia.

A special category of numismatics comprises labour tokens, vouchers of the city and individual counties in the territory of Slovakia from the 18^th and 19^th centuries.

A much-praised collection of small moulded tokens is represented by coronation medals and tokens of emperors of the Hungarian Empire from 1563 to 1830 as well as awards and plaques documenting the development of Bratislava from the 17^th century to the present day.
